Hello

I'm Samantha Scott—a student, literacy mentor, and passionate advocate for educational equity. Through my work with Community Reading Buddies and my local public library, I’ve seen how powerful reading can be for a child’s confidence and future. I started Literacy Doorway to help others learn, share, and take action to close the literacy gap.

My Story

My interest in children’s literacy began when I joined Community Reading Buddies, a mentorship program where I worked one-on-one with young students to help build their reading skills and confidence. What started as a volunteer opportunity quickly became a deep passion. I saw kids light up when they connected with a story, or finally sounded out a word they’d been stuck on for weeks. I also volunteered at my local public library, where I helped children discover books they loved and supported families in finding reading resources. These experiences showed me how uneven access to literacy support can be—especially in lower-income communities where schools may be underfunded and families don’t always have the tools they need. I created Literacy Doorway as a way to share what I’ve learned, offer helpful resources, and encourage others—students, parents, educators, and volunteers—to take part in closing the literacy gap. I believe that small efforts, when linked together, can lead to meaningful change.
