About

Welcome to Literacy Doorway

At Literacy Doorway, we believe that the ability to read is more than just a fundamental skill—it's a doorway to opportunity, imagination, and lifelong success. But for too many children in underserved communities, that doorway remains closed. Our mission is to help change that.

Why this matters

Across the country, especially in lower-income communities, thousands of children fall behind in reading before they even have a chance to catch up. Inadequate school funding, limited access to books at home, and overworked educators all contribute to a widening literacy gap. Children who don’t read proficiently by third grade are more likely to struggle academically, disengage from school, and face long-term barriers to success.

But here's the truth: reading isn’t just about academics. It builds confidence, sparks imagination, strengthens communication, and opens kids to new worlds. When we help children learn to read, we’re not just teaching them letters and sounds—we’re empowering them to shape their own future.

Where this Started

My journey into literacy advocacy began through my work with Community Reading Buddies (CRB), where I mentored young students and saw firsthand how even a little one-on-one attention could transform a child’s attitude toward reading.I served in a underserved community and saw the first hand affect that had on children's education comparatively to my own experience. I also volunteered at my local public library, where I helped kids discover new books, led reading activities, and supported families looking for literacy resources.

Those experiences opened my eyes to how big the gap is and that I have a duty to change and close that gap.

What We're Building

Literacy Doorway is a platform designed to inform, inspire, and connect. Here, you’ll find:

  • Resources for parents, caregivers, and volunteers.

  • Volunteer opportunities to support young readers.

  • Stories from the field—real-life moments of joy, struggle, and growth.

  • Advocacy tools to help communities push for stronger literacy programs and equitable school funding.

This isn’t just a website. It’s a call to action: to build a world where every child, regardless of zip code, has the chance to read, learn, and thrive.
